A Citrus and Wine festival showcasing the best wines from the Cederberg and Piekenierskloof region on what they have to offer. The tickets include a glass and entry to the festival for both days. Join Etienne van Bart in co-creating a simulated 'rock painting'! Engaging my hypothesis

that the rockface is a three-dimensional 'found background', we will collaboratively design an

abstract rock face by painting a large hardboard - and then superimpose fine-line paintings upon this

imaginative backdrop to complete the spell...and enter the rockface.

Stage 1 (9am - 12noon): as a group, decorate a primed masonite hardboard in the subtle hues and

tones of a smooth rockface. This approach requires a subtle, pre-conscious balance between abstract

expression (what the rockface suggests/evokes) and realism (how the rockface appears and feels).

Stage 2 (1pm - 4pm): once the 'rock surface' has dried, we populate the imaginative

landscape/worldscape with fine-line imagery in the stylistic idiom of San painting, but using our

own unique lived experience as our source of symbolic expression. Since we do not know why

Bushman painters painted, we are free either to tell symbolic narratives, express visions, or simply

create spellbinding imagery. Consider: maybe the Bushman also didn't 'know' why they painted...

All materials for painting and engraving, including paint, oil pastels and paintbrushes, will be

provided. You just need to show up as you are, in clothes you don't mind splattering with paint.
